A Global South Aspiration for Principled Finance: Press Conference Recap

This blog is also available in French and Indonesian.

On June 10, 2024, 350.org proudly hosted a pivotal press conference to launch the “Global Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) Principles,” marking a significant milestone in the fight for equitable climate finance. This event, held virtually and translated into English, French, Vietnamese and Bahasa, gathered civil society representatives from South Africa, Indonesia, Senegal, Vietnam and beyond, underscoring the urgency of principled finance in the Global South’s energy transition.

Key Highlights:

  • Principles for a Fair JETP: Developed collaboratively by civil society and community based organisations from JETP recipient countries, these principles emphasise local contexts and the inclusion of communities in decision-making processes. They aim to empower civil society, serve as a base for action and ultimately ensure that the transition to low-carbon energy is just and equitable.
  • Unified Voices from the Global South: A panel of activists, including representatives from Nu Climate Vision (South Africa), Lumière Synergie Développement (Senegal), International Rivers (Vietnam) and Trend Asia (Indonesia), articulated the collective aspirations and demands of their respective countries. Their powerful testimonies highlighted the necessity for transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in JETPs.
  • Call to Action for G7 Leaders: With the G7 Leaders Summit on the horizon, the press conference served as a rallying cry for greater financial commitments from the world’s richest economies. Activists called on G7 countries to pay up and fulfil their climate finance promises, ensuring that the Global South is supported in its transition away from fossil fuels.
  • Interactive Q&A Session: The event included a dynamic Q&A session, where journalists and attendees engaged with the panellists, probing deeper into the principles and the broader implications for global climate policy.
  • Commitment to Ongoing Engagement: The press conference concluded with a commitment to continuous dialogue and collaboration. The principles that were launched are not static but will evolve through ongoing consultations with local communities and stakeholders, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful.

The launch of the “Global JETP Principles” is just the beginning. As we approach COP29, it is crucial that these principles guide the international community’s approach to climate finance. We call on G7 leaders to demonstrate real leadership by committing significant resources to support a just and equitable energy transition in the Global South.
